Google Tests Text Link Ads in Google AI Mode

Google is testing text-link ads in AI Mode, adding a Sponsored label that gives businesses a clearer signal to track paid visibility inside AI answers.

Google is testing a text-based link format for ads within AI Mode, according to Search Engine Roundtable’s September 15, 2026 report. The same report documents the earlier April test, desktop and mobile layouts, and concerns about click behavior, but these details remain observations from that report rather than a complete Google policy announcement.

What does this mean for my business?

AI Mode creates a separate advertising surface inside a generative search experience. The Sponsored label identifies the links as advertising. Search Engine Roundtable reported that the text-based ads were labeled as “Sponsored” above the AI-generated response.

For campaign planning, treat AI Mode ads as their own visibility channel. Paid placement inside an AI answer does not guarantee that the advertiser’s domain will be cited as a source or rank in ordinary organic results. A SE Ranking study reported by Search Engine Land found that only 11.53% of advertiser domains appeared among cited sources for the keywords they advertised on. URL-level overlap was 1.95%, while only 2.32% of advertised URLs ranked organically for the same queries.

What Google is testing

The tested format presents text links with ordinary-looking anchor text. According to Search Engine Roundtable, the ads are labeled as “Sponsored” above the AI-generated response. The publication showed desktop and mobile examples showing separate placements, including an arrangement in which normal ads appeared below the AI answer for a similar query.

This differs from the April observation reported by Search Engine Roundtable. That earlier test showed text anchor links inside AI Mode responses without the current advertising treatment. The new test gives those links a sponsored format and a visible disclosure.

The format remains text-based rather than using a richer visual advertisement. That matters because the report cited a tendency for people to avoid clicking links inside AI responses and expressed doubt that the text-only format would produce the same click-through rate as normal ads. That is an assessment reported by the publication, not a disclosed performance result from Google.

What business owners should check

What is confirmed vs. still uncertain

Reported by Search Engine Roundtable:

  • Google is testing a text-based link format for ads within AI Mode.
  • The ad unit includes a Sponsored label above the AI-generated response.
  • The format uses text links rather than a richer visual ad.

Reported by Search Engine Roundtable, but not established as Google policy:

  • The April test included text anchor links without the newer advertising treatment.
  • Google showed separate desktop and mobile layouts.
  • This format may resemble organic content enough to affect click-through rates.
  • People generally do not click links in AI responses, which can encourage advertisers to use richer advertisements in those environments.

How common are AI Mode ads?

Commercial-query data suggests that AI Mode advertising was already present at scale before the text-link test reported in September. Search Engine Land reported a SE Ranking study that examined 50,032 U.S. commercial keywords across 20 niches. Text ads appeared on 14,733 queries, or 29.45% of the commercial queries where they could appear.

The study used results collected on June 30 and excluded product carousels. Its authors said the observed rate could be higher because AI Mode results varied between sessions. Most ad-triggering queries displayed two advertisers. The study reported rates of 24.33% for keywords with CPCs below $2, 32.45% for CPCs from $2 to $10, and 53.56% for CPCs of $10 or more.

Ad frequency also varied substantially by category. It reached 72.38% for the analyzed pet keywords and 2.64% for healthcare keywords. The researchers associated higher rates with lead-generation categories that have clearer paths to paid conversion, while informational and YMYL categories showed lower rates.

How AI Mode citations differ from traditional results

A separate SE Ranking study of 10,000 U.S. keywords found that AI Mode results have their own source patterns. AI Mode and AI Overviews shared 10.7% of URLs and 16% of domains. Compared with the traditional organic top 10, the overlap was 14% at URL level and 21.9% at domain level.

Only 9.2% of URLs matched across three tests of the same query, which the researchers described as high volatility. The average AI Mode answer contained 12.6 links. Most citations appeared in separate blocks, while 8.9% appeared as inline text links.

The study also examined business information. Google accounted for 5.7% of all cited sources, and 98% of its links were embedded in AI Mode text responses. Of those Google links, 97.9% pointed to Google Maps business profiles, which appeared in 9.2% of responses. These findings show why a business should evaluate its business listing and AI-answer visibility separately from a conventional search ranking.

What to do now

  1. Monitor AI Mode separately from standard Search. Check the queries most relevant to your business and record whether a sponsored link appears. Ask your agency, campaign manager or reporting specialist to keep AI Mode results distinct from ordinary search results.
  2. Verify the Sponsored label on both desktop and mobile. Record whether the disclosure remains visible and whether the ad sits above, below or around the generated answer. Search Engine Roundtable showed separate desktop and mobile examples.
  3. Compare intent with the landing page. Review the query that triggered the ad and confirm that the destination page directly answers the same need. Match the page to the commercial intent rather than reusing a generic homepage.
  4. Track impressions and clicks as separate measures. Record impressions, clicks and click-through rate by query, device and placement where the reporting source permits. Do not treat an AI Mode impression as a source citation or an organic ranking.
  5. Check referral and attribution data. Ask your analytics or search reporting contact whether AI Mode referrals can be identified separately. Confirm how the referring query appears in your reporting data.
