Star Music Company

Star Music Company is a musical instrument store in Columbia, SC, located at 1322 Assembly St. Since 1962, the business has provided musicians and music educators with instrument repair, instrument rentals, and lessons. It serves the local community and offers free delivery to most SC schools for band and orchestra rentals. The store holds a rating of 3.80 based on 49 reviews.

The business began in January 1962 under the vision of Manuel “Manny” Lifchez, who converted the building from his father’s pawn shop, Star Loan Company, after Richland School District One mistakenly requested Selmer band instruments. Manny initially focused on band instruments but expanded the inventory to include drums, amps, and electric guitars to serve aspiring rock musicians. He personally managed the shop, handling stock and sales while building relationships with local band directors.

Under the leadership of Manny’s daughter, Jeanmarie, the company expanded its product offerings and maintained its family-driven approach. The store carries brands such as Alvarez Guitars, Armstrong, Bach, Backun, Conn, Eastman, Gemeinhardt, Henri Selmer Paris, Holton, King, Leblanc, Luna Guitars, and S.E. Shires Co. It stocks a wide range of instruments including trumpets, French horns, trombones, tubas, piccolos, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, violins, violas, cellos, basses, acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, and ukuleles. The inventory also includes band method books, string method books, and accessories for marching bands and orchestras.

Star Music Company is known for its steady record of repeat and referred customers, reflecting a long-standing reputation in the area.

For nearly six decades, Star Music Company has served Columbia musicians with a deep inventory and family heritage.

The store sits on Assembly Street, just a short distance from the SC State Armory and the SC Education Lottery Claims Center.
