The shop was opened in 2013 by Erin, who grew up in rural SC, where baking was part of everyday life. She remembers baking dozens of varieties of holiday cookies with her grandfather and her mother being fearless in the kitchen, willing to try any recipe. This passion brought her to the University of SC, where she earned an undergraduate degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management. She then moved to New York City to attend the French Culinary Institute, studying Classic Pastry Arts and the Art of International Bread Baking. After interning with world-renowned cake artist Ron Ben-Israel Cakes, she moved back to warmer weather and sweet tea. After working in both Charleston and Charlotte, Erin returned to Columbia to open Silver Spoon in 2013.
The shop sits on Devine Street, about 0.2 miles from Emily Douglas Park and the Shandon neighborhood, and 0.3 miles from Hand Middle School and Richland Library Wheatley.
Silver Spoon Bake Shop's strong local reputation is reflected in its consistently high customer ratings, and its established track record is built on a large base of customer reviews. Due to employee shortages and rising ingredient costs, day-to-day retail is closed; instead, the shop posts a weekly pre-order menu on Wednesday at 8 pm, with pick-up on Friday from 3-6 on the front porch. More details are available on the shop's Facebook and Instagram pages.
