Experience Columbia SC, the parent destination marketing organization, began in 1984 as the Greater Columbia Convention & Visitors Bureau. Its mission is to strengthen the area’s economy by marketing and selling the region as a premier destination for meetings, conventions, tradeshows, special events, and leisure travel. The organization works with accommodations, restaurants, facilities, and attractions to provide services that promote the Columbia area. The DMO is funded by a combination of private and public funds, including accommodations taxes from the City of Columbia, Richland County, and Lexington County, as well as the Town of Lexington, City of Cayce, West Columbia, and Town of Irmo. It also receives a Destination Specific Grant from the SC Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism.

The Columbia SC tourism structure includes sister organizations such as the Midlands Authority for Conventions Sports & Tourism and the Columbia Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau. These entities operate under three brands: Experience Columbia SC, the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, and Experience Columbia SC Sports. The broader organization includes teams for sales, convention services, and partnership services, led by an Executive Director.
