He was owed back salary during the Great Depression and took compensation in jewelry merchandise. He started the business as Harry Cornell & Co., Inc., specializing in loose diamonds. Harry traveled regionally while his brother Maurice managed the office. David Cornell, Harry’s son, joined the company full-time at age 21. Harry and his partners later sold the business to David. The company operated in downtown Rochester for 74 years before moving to the current suburban location at 3100 Monroe Avenue. David and his wife Olivia oversaw the renovation of the brick free-standing store. After outgrowing the space, they added land next to the building for more parking. Another extensive renovation took over 18 months.
