The life-size bronze statue was created by Greenville artist Doug Young and was originally unveiled on July 13, 2002, at the intersection of Main Street and River Street. In 2018, it was moved to its current location next to the Greenville Drive Team Store at Fluor Field. The statue honors Shoeless Joe Jackson, whose legacy is preserved by the independent, non-profit Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum and Baseball Library, located across the street at 356 Field Street. The museum operates in the house Joe and Katie Jackson built in 1940 and lived in from 1941 until their deaths in 1951 and 1959. Originally at 119 E. Wilburn Avenue, the house was lifted, cut in half, and moved 2.1 miles to its current address in 2006, with the new number honoring Joe's .356 career batting average. The museum opened to the public on June 21, 2008, after more than a year of renovations. In 2020, the building was moved again by about 100 yards to accommodate the construction of the .408 Jackson luxury apartment complex, receiving a new roof, HVAC system, and an addition that doubled its size. The museum displays original artifacts, photos, and books to educate the public about Jackson's life and career. Visitors often leave baseballs, shoes, pennies, or handwritten notes on Jackson's tombstone at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
