Suenaka to reunite the martial and spiritual elements of the art. The school holds a 5.00 rating based on 4 reviews.

Sensei Suenaka was a direct student of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba O’Sensei and incorporates all of his teachings into his instruction. As a student of many other arts and masters, Suenaka imbues a wealth of knowledge and experience into his teaching. The Wadokai Aikido Hombu Dojo in Charleston serves as the organizational headquarters where Suenaka, the Soke, teaches Aikido on a regular basis. Senior students and assistant instructors share administrative duties and offer further instruction and classes. The training environment is described as joyful and welcoming, without conflict or machismo, requiring austere study that takes decades.

The organization was created after the passing of O’Sensei in 1969 to maintain the balance between ki and technique that Sensei Suenaka learned at the Hombu Dojo. Rather than side with Koichi Tohei of The Ki Society or Doshu Kissomaru Ueshiba of Aikikai, Suenaka established Wadokai to promote the Aikido he learned from the founder. The goal is to promote the physical and spiritual aspects of the art, guiding students toward satori, or enlightenment. The study is considered a lifelong journey of perfecting physical technique and applying Aikido principles in daily life.

Students who have reviewed the school have given it a positive rating, reflecting the quality of instruction and the welcoming atmosphere. The school is known for its close-knit family environment and the rigorous, dynamic physical practice it provides.

Wadokai Aikido brings the unique Suenaka-Ha style of Aikido to Charleston, offering a path of harmony and personal development rooted in the teachings of Morihei Ueshiba.
