Tanya N. Turan, MD, MSCR

Tanya N. Turan, MD, MSCR is a neurologist in Charleston, SC. She serves as a Professor of Neurology with tenure and the Director of the Stroke Neurology Division at MUSC. Her practice focuses on the secondary prevention of stroke and vascular neurology. She holds a medical degree from the Medical University of SC and completed her residency, internship, and fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Turan was recruited to MUSC in 2008 as an academic clinician. Her research centers on understanding traditional and novel risk factors in stroke-related atherosclerosis. She has received several NIH grants to study novel MR imaging techniques for identifying high-risk intracranial plaque features. She directs and oversees intensive risk factor management in NIH-funded, multi-center clinical trials, including the Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Prevention of Recurrent stroke in Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS) trial and the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy and Stenting Trial 2 (CREST 2). Additionally, she serves as the director of MUSC's NIH-StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center, known as the Southeast Collaborative Alliance for Stroke Trials (SE-CoAST). She has published numerous papers and presented her research at local, national, and international conferences.
