Porter-Gaud School of Charleston

Porter-Gaud School of Charleston is a coeducational independent Episcopal day school serving grades 1 through 12 in Charleston, SC. The school's educational journey begins at the O'Quinn Schools, which serve preschool students from age two through kindergarten on two campuses, and continues through graduation from Upper School. Porter-Gaud enrolls 1,053 students, with 286 in the Lower School, 340 in the Middle School, and 427 in the Upper School. Admission entry points are 1st, 6th, and 9th grades, and the school also admits students into other grades based on attrition. The Learning Services Program supports students with diagnosed learning differences from preschool through twelfth grade through academic coaching, educational accommodations, and individualized Learning Plans. Athletics include more than 60 teams from bantam to varsity competing in SCISA, with sports ranging from baseball, basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis, and volleyball to equestrian, sporting clays, and wrestling. Lower and Middle School students can take part in roughly 40 enrichment options across the year, including 3D Printing, Chess Club, Karate, Ballet, and Acting.

Porter-Gaud traces its history to October 1867, when the Reverend Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter founded the Holy Communion Church Institute to educate children orphaned or experiencing poverty in Charleston. The school later became the Porter Military Academy and moved in 1879 to the grounds of the old Federal Arsenal in downtown Charleston. In 1964, the PMA trustees merged with the Gaud School and the Watt School to create the current Porter-Gaud School, which then sold its campus and moved to its present location on the banks of the Ashley River. The school integrated in the 1967-68 school year and welcomed its first female students in 1972-73. In 2008, it expanded through the acquisition of the O'Quinn School. The school's founding principle is the acronym WATCH - Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character, and Habits - and its mission is to inspire lives of purpose, learning, and service through cultivating each student's God-given potential.
