Porter-Gaud School is a coeducational independent day school in Charleston, SC, serving students from grades 1 through 12. Founded in 1867 as the Holy Communion Church Institute by Reverend Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter, the school began as a response to the needs of orphaned and impoverished children in post-Civil War Charleston. Over time, it evolved into the Porter Military Academy, maintaining its Episcopal identity while expanding its educational mission. In 1964, the school merged with the Gaud School and the Watt School to form the current Porter-Gaud School, relocating to its present site on the banks of the Ashley River. Today, the school continues to uphold its founding principles, fostering a community where students are empowered to reach their God-given potential through a holistic, values-based education.
