Douglas Alterman, DMD

Douglas Alterman, DMD is a dental implants periodontist in Charleston, SC. He practices at the MUSC Dental and Oral Health facility located at 29 Bee Street within the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Alterman brings over 30 years of experience in restorative and cosmetic dentistry to his patients. His clinical background includes serving as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy, where he was responsible for the dental readiness of over 3,000 sailors and Marines aboard the USS Ponce LPD-15. Following his naval service, he established a private practice in Charleston, which he managed for 32 years. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Tulane University and a D.M.D. from MUSC, with advanced training from the Naval Medical Center San Diego and the LD Pankey Institute. Dr. Alterman has served as President of the SC State Board of Dentistry and is an active member of several professional organizations. He currently directs MUSC's Dental Faculty Practice, focusing on enhancing both patient and staff experiences. His clinical areas of interest include restorative and cosmetic dentistry.
