Kensie Whitfield, a Charleston native who has climbed since 2000, co-founded the gym after helping create the first semipublic indoor bouldering space in the area, known as The Ballroom. They opened Coastal Climbing at 708 King Street, becoming the first bouldering-only climbing gym in the Southeast region.
