American Gardens Project is a community park in Charleston, SC, nestled in the heart of downtown. The park was conceived in response to a 2022 Post & Courier op-ed questioning whether Charleston was losing its last chance for a central downtown park. BHC acquired the site, partnered with visionary landscape designers Rees Roberts + Partners, and created a formal, enduring green space that honors Charleston’s heritage while serving contemporary needs. The design emphasizes connectivity, natural beauty, and community engagement, with programming that invites residents and travelers to pause, gather, and enjoy the city’s outdoor character. The space spans a full city block, integrating mature trees and custom water features into a cohesive, inviting layout.

American Gardens Project sits on Meeting Street, just a short walk from several historic and cultural sites. It is located about 85 meters from Lenhardt Garden and within 100 meters of the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Carolina Art Association / James S. Gibbes Memorial Art Gallery Marker, and the Charleston Gas Light Company Marker. The park lies near the circular congregation’s Parish House and is accessible from Meeting Street, a historic thoroughfare that runs through the heart of the city’s historic district.
