He was known as an instructor, architect, and preservationist, and in 1977 he described the building’s design as marking a new, contemporary period in Charleston’s architectural history. The center’s reopening in 2024 marked a new era of growth and creativity for the School of the Arts, with the presence of Simons’ grandson, Albert Simons III, and granddaughter-in-law Theodora at the event. The building now houses a curated collection of artwork, including pieces by notable alumni such as Brian Rutenberg, whose painting *Sandspur* was displayed during the opening.
