The firm traces its origins to 1849, when Simon J. Martenet began his career with Thomas P. Chiffelle, a West Point-trained surveyor and engineer. Chiffelle operated a business in Baltimore as early as 1843 and served as Baltimore City Surveyor from 1851 through 1854. After Chiffelle left Baltimore in 1854, Martenet assumed sole control of the business. The firm has operated for 177 years and has participated in Baltimore's development since before the Civil War. During this early period, Martenet prepared a Map of Maryland that impressed the Legislature enough to be ordered for use in all public schools. The bulk of the work consisted of property surveys, topographic surveys, and new development layouts. Martenet developed the tract he named Parkville and was involved in the creation of Aberdeen, Canton, Govans, Arlington, and Fairfield. The firm was elected six times to the office of City Surveyor and was involved in real estate activities including development, appraising, and agency.
Today, the firm maintains a completely digital workflow to aid in speed and ease of distribution. Its archives contain over 70,000 surveys, most of which are digital and online. The firm serves as the record custodian for four other regional firms. The collection includes base survey files for approximately 56,000 surveys, field notebooks, and Survey Record books maintained until about 1909. It also holds architectural drawings of notable buildings, ledger books of Mayor and City Council land transactions, Water Department records concerning watershed land, and records concerning the estates of prominent Baltimoreans such as John W. Garrett, William Wilkens, and John S. Gittings. The archives include contextual material such as official government actions, title abstracts, and historical compilations. The firm uses this data to reproduce property lines with greater fidelity, addressing the challenges of imperfect measurements in older surveys.
