Painters Greenhouse is a family-owned greenhouse in Old Fort, NC, that has supplied Western North Carolina with high-quality plants for over 50 years. The business features over 100,000 square feet of growing and retail space where it cultivates approximately 1,000 species on-site. More than 90% of its plants are grown at this facility, including a vast selection of native and pollinator plants, over 900 varieties of perennials, giant Boston ferns, robust trees and shrubs, and mature houseplants. The inventory includes homegrown plants inspected and watered by hand, ensuring they avoid shipping damage and transport from other climates.

The business focuses on sustainability and local ecology by using organic, non-toxic pest treatments and beneficial insects whenever possible. By growing plants locally, the greenhouse reduces fuel use and carbon footprint while passing savings to customers. For select items not grown on-site, the business sources from other small local businesses. The team provides knowledgeable and friendly guidance to gardeners of all experience levels, specializing in species that support biodiverse ecosystems and local wildlife.

Brad, Deenie, and Dana Owen purchased the business in 2010 after the original owners, Susie and Stephen Painter, retired. Brad, a former wetlands biologist, Deenie, with a background in therapeutic massage, and Dana, with education in environmental science and raptor biology, have expanded the diversity of crops offered. Stephen and Susie stayed on as consultants for a year to assist with the transition. The business is widely known for its friendly staff and extensive selection, described as a paradise for plant lovers.
