VITAL was started in 2010 by Dave and his friend Nam, who first learned to climb together in San Luis Obispo, California, where they met in college. The two remain best friends, still co-own and run the company together, and have personally been involved in designing and building each location over the years. The company's stated mission is to create places that people love, with a culture built around trust, community, and a welcoming atmosphere. VITAL operates on an honor system for unstaffed access, shoe rentals, snacks, and guest passes, a practice the founders say has worked because members have proven trustworthy. The company is primarily financed by an investor team of more than one hundred current and former members, friends, and staff who have invested personal savings in the business. VITAL also operates locations in the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, Bellingham, and California. The West Harlem location sits on Broadway near West 125th Street, about 0.1 miles from the 125th Street train station and roughly the same distance from Manhattan Community Board 9. With 265 reviews and an average rating of 4.70, VITAL Climbing Gym - West Harlem is one of the highest-rated climbing facilities in New York, a reputation earned through more than a decade of operation and a membership model built on trust and community.
