Hinnant Family Vineyards is the largest muscadine vineyard in the state, sprawling over 100 acres. It all started in 1971 when Hinnant siblings Jacqueline, Freddie, Douglas, and Willard dreamed of starting a vineyard in Johnston County. Glen, Freddie’s husband, served as the original vineyard manager while the siblings maintained other careers. In the early years, grapes were sold to fresh markets, other vineyards, and the public. At the turn of the century, Williard and his son Bob began creating wine from the family vineyard. In 2003, they sold their first bottle. After Williard passed away in 2013, Bob continued operating the winery with his family’s support.

The family acquired all land and holdings from Williard’s siblings, growing the original acreage to 100 acres of grapes. Hinnant Family Vineyards & Winery is the oldest and largest commercial Muscadine vineyard in North Carolina. Every September, the vineyard encourages the public to pick their own Muscadine grapes during the harvest season. A large white tent marks the start of the season, where customers can purchase pre-picked grapes or pick their own. The vineyard is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00am to 6:00pm, Friday until 8:00pm, and Sunday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.
