Founded in 1998 by principal Cheryl Fosdick, the firm has designed more than 150 new homes and remodels over its existence. Cheryl concentrates on residential new projects and remodeling, with over 100 built and in-progress works throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. Her practice is attentive to energy and spatial efficiency, as well as material clarity, simplicity, and sympathy with the building site and context. Prior to founding CF Design, she was co-principal and owner of Salmela Fosdick, Ltd., a firm whose work was rooted in a strong sense of regionalism; their second project for the State of Minnesota was the Gooseberry Falls Visitor Center, completed in 1996 and an AIA Honor Award winner in 1997, with two later additions guided by their original work completed in 1999 and 2001. In 2023, the firm created LUMstudio to educate the community and clients in matters of light and its capacity to render form and surface; LUMstudio is open to the public for both education and procurement of lighting from international fabricators and designers. Design services are organized around project design, consultation, and education and procurement, with the firm's process described as comparing physical and abstract ideas about space and form, shaped through discussion and observation of clients' lives and the relationships between spaces, materials, patterns, and forms.

The office sits on East Superior Street, near its intersection with West Michigan Street. The NorShor Theatre, Gichi-Ode' Akiing park, and the HART District are all within a short walk, and Fond-du-Luth Casino is about a quarter mile away.
