Clark Paint & Varnish Co., Inc. was founded in 1928 by Fred Clark, who originally operated as a one-room door-to-door paint manufacturer with a single employee. In 1947, Milford Raker purchased the business from Clark and permanently relocated his family from Scranton, Pennsylvania, to the West Springfield area. Under Raker’s leadership, the factory became the area’s first discounter with the slogan "Factory to You," offering high-quality manufactured paint and wallpaper lines. After Milford’s death in 1963, his wife Ruth Raker managed the business through periods of intense competition from major discounters and chain operations. Andrew Raker took over Clark Paint & Varnish Co. in 1978 from his mother and grandmother. The factory continues to supply industrial accounts with specialty finishes, including polyurethane varnish in gloss or matte finishes. A paint specialist can travel to a company to advise on coatings and customize paint jobs with factory-fresh products. The business also provides paints designed for businesses that cannot close for a day, such as supermarkets, allowing for night-time application and hard finishes by morning. Clark Paint caters to all types of industry, carrying top national brands of paints, stains, and industrial finishes, and offers expert custom matching on the spot.
