Begun in the early-1970s as a buyer and seller of used HiFi components, Q Audio initially operated as a mail-order business through classified ads in Audio Magazine. In the mid-1970s, the company warehoused vintage and high-end equipment in the original Tech HiFi store at 95 Vassar Street in Cambridge. By the late-1970s, it remained mail-order only, focusing on exporting American and European hand-crafted, classic, vacuum tube components to collectors in Japan, Asia, and Europe. In early Fall 1980, the Vassar Street storage room was converted into a retail store selling pre-owned equipment. The business added new brands like Hafler amplifier kits, Krell high-end electronics, and Pyramid Loudspeakers. In October 1982, Q Audio brought the first CD Players to the US for resale, sparking growth in the digital audio market. The store expanded its hours, hired employees, and eventually moved to a larger storefront at 5 Brookline Street in October 2013, directly across from the Middle East Restaurant & Nightclub.

Q Audio is known for its long-standing presence in the Cambridge audio community, offering both sales and specialized repair services for high-end audio equipment.
