Mr. Berlin and Dr. Lion, facing terminal cancer diagnoses, collaborated with their oncologist Dr. Kahn to establish The Hospice Foundation of Greater Baton Rouge, which laid the foundation for the current organization. Today, it stands as the oldest hospice in the city and was the first to open an in-patient unit in Baton Rouge. The interdisciplinary care team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, aides, and trained volunteers who collaborate to create personalized care plans. Registered nurses conduct most visits, and small patient caseloads allow them to spend more time with patients. The organization extends its Bereavement Support Program to families for 13 months after a patient’s passing, encompassing cards, letters, phone calls, visits, and participation in support groups. As a nonprofit, it does not turn anyone away and relies on community support to provide care regardless of ability to pay.
