Center for Community Health and Development

Center for Community Health and Development is a University in Lawrence, KS, located at 1000 Sunnyside Ave. Affiliated with the Department of Applied Behavioral Science and the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies at the University of Kansas, the Center supports community health and development through collaborative research, evaluation, teaching, training, and technical support. Since 1975, generations of Ph.D.-level researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and professional staff have carried on this effort. The Center is recognized as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health and Development, a designation it has held since 2004. Its multi-generational team includes professionals with disciplinary backgrounds in applied behavioral science, community psychology, anthropology, education, law, child development, urban planning, and public health. They address issues including health promotion, substance abuse, education, child and youth development, rural health, and neighborhood development in urban communities.

The Center offers a variety of services to support the work of promoting community health and development, including the Community Check Box Evaluation System, Community Tool Box Training Curriculum, capacity building trainings, community health assessment and planning, and facilitation of community processes. Staff provide facilitation for small and large group processes, including coalition meetings, board retreats, town hall meetings, focus groups, PhotoVoice initiatives, and collaborative community planning. The Center’s Community Tool Box is the world's largest resource for building capacity for community health and development, containing over 7,000 pages of content available in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi. It serves 6 million unique users annually from 300 countries. The Center also created the Building Healthy Communities online course, featuring 16 self-contained instructional modules for developing practical skills in core areas of community health and development.

The Center provides research and evaluation, teaching and training, and technical support for various initiatives. It supports the Kansas Department of Children and Environment and the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence in the primary prevention of sexual violence. It provides evaluation and capacity-building training for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s maternal and child health efforts and supports the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services in preventing substance abuse. The Center also serves as the third-party evaluator for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation’s Collective Impact Initiative. The Center has partnered with the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department to form the first Academic Health Department in the state of Kansas.
