Founded in 2009 by Mark Skoskiewicz, who holds an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and degrees from Indiana University, MyGuru connects students with elite tutors who typically have five or more years of teaching experience and degrees from highly selective universities. The team includes Director of Online Tutoring Stefan Maisnier, who has over a decade of experience teaching standardized tests, and Managing Tutor Morgan Bissett-Tessier. Tutors are independent contractors who have attended highly regarded institutions and scored in the 95th percentile or better on relevant standardized tests. The majority of instruction occurs online using a virtual whiteboarding tool, though sessions can also be conducted in student homes, offices, or public spaces like libraries and coffee shops upon request.

The business is a Better Business Bureau certified company that takes responsibility for the quality of its tutors and student satisfaction. They offer a money-back guarantee on the first session and provide flexible payment options including credit cards, PayPal, and checks. The tutoring approach focuses on dynamic, real-time instruction rather than standardized curricula. For academic subjects, tutors work with a student's specific lecture notes, textbooks, and assigned homework. For standardized test preparation, the service utilizes official prep books alongside full-length, timed practice tests that are reviewed during sessions. The leadership team includes professionals with advanced degrees from institutions such as Northwestern University and Indiana University, with experience ranging from strategy consulting to specialized instructional roles.
