HeadNodHQ - American Jiu Jitsu is a Martial Arts School in Granite City, IL. The school focuses on American Jiu Jitsu, a martial art centered on grappling and ground fighting that emphasizes skillful leveraging techniques to allow smaller individuals to defend themselves against larger opponents. The path to HeadNod began in a garage in 2002 when owner Josh McKinney and his father Steve started training together. After years of training and competing, Josh opened the first Granite City location in 2015. The business expanded with a Jerseyville school in 2019, upgraded to a larger Granite City facility in 2020, and opened an Edwardsville location in 2025. The team includes highly-ranked grapplers, many of whom are adult black belts promoted under owners Josh and Steve McKinney. The school’s philosophy is based on concepts rather than rituals, drawing from wrestling roots, pressure, and continuous adaptation. A unique training method called Designated Winner Training, originating from HeadNod, is used to ensure students do not over-practice the same techniques, allowing them to maximize their potential and reach their goals.
