The Drake occupies a historic building in the heart of what was once Burlington’s River District. The structure was erected in 1906, originally serving as part of the Drake Hardware operations, which had been started in 1864 and incorporated in 1899 before ceasing business in 1980. The building stands on a five-foot-thick rubble stone foundation with brick walls that taper from 36 inches at the base to 14 inches at the top. The interior features post-and-beam construction using southern white pine. Architectural elements from the building’s earlier life remain visible, including large double doors on the north wall built from timbers dating back to 1860, four windows from the old Burlington YMCA, and a back bar mirror from an 1890 Mediapolis tavern.

The restaurant maintains a solid reputation among the customers it has served.
