Suncoast Karate Dojo

Suncoast Karate Dojo is a Martial Arts School in Gulf Gate Estates, FL. The dojo teaches Okinawan Shuri Ryu Karatedo, a centuries-old martial art centered on fitness, defense, respect, and confidence. Founder and Chief Instructor Hanshi Donna Judge, 9th Dan in Okinawan Shuri Ryu, began her karate career in 1973 at age 17 and opened her first dojo in 1976. A direct student of 10th Dan Hanshi John Pachivas, she brings authentic traditional training to the school. Judge has earned national and international recognition, winning eleven Light Contact Women's Fighting Champion titles between 1982 and 1992, Team Semi Contact Fighting Champion honors in 1987 and 1988, and Individual Semi-Contact Fighting Champion titles in 1988 and 1989. In 1987, Grandmaster Robert Trias appointed her Team Captain for the women's USKA team, which she led to a gold medal at the Japan Goodwill Karate Championships. She was named "Sportswomen of the Year" and "Top Female Fighter of the Year" in 1992, inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1995, and received the Living Legends Sport Karate Award in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 18, 2003.

The instruction is led by a team of high-ranking black belts, all members of the International Shuri Ryu Association. The staff includes Renshi John Wong (7th Dan), Renshi Malele Nzeza (7th Dan), Shihan Linda Cleary (6th Dan), Shihan Chris Snider (6th Dan), Shihan Thomas Harty (6th Dan), Shihan Bart Scovill (6th Dan), Shihan Steve Schroeder (6th Dan), and several Sensei at the 5th and 4th Dan levels. These instructors include educators from Sarasota High School and Riverview High School, a firefighter EMT with Southern Manatee Fire Rescue, a retired Hillsborough County Fire Rescue captain and paramedic, an attorney specializing in wills, trusts, and probate, and a Navy service member. Classes run Monday through Wednesday for youth and adult programs, with teens and black belts meeting Tuesday and Thursday. The school also offers private lessons, seminars, and self-defense workshops for kids and adults, and welcomes visitors to stop by and watch a class.

Suncoast Karate Dojo brings together a Hall of Fame founder, a roster of accomplished black-belt instructors from fields including education, emergency services, and law, and a curriculum built on traditional Okinawan Shuri-Ryu Karate-do to serve students across Gulf Gate Estates.
