Its history includes Charles Herd Greer, a newspaperman in Montgomery, Wedewee, Lafayette, Opelika, and Birmingham, who was managing editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald in 1897, started setting type at age eleven, and was later inducted into the Newspaper Hall of Fame. He purchased The Sylacauga News in 1917, and the Greer family began printing in Sylacauga. Roe Greer worked alongside his father until 1942, when he was appointed postmaster in Sylacauga. Jeptha V. Greer, Roe's brother, took over operation of the paper in the 1940s. Charles (Chuck) Greer II worked alongside his father Jeptha at the newspaper, and in 1979, Chuck sold the newspaper to start a company devoted to printing for businesses and individuals, and Swen was born.
