The City of Fairfield, founded in 1910 and incorporated in 1919, is located on the west side of Jefferson County directly adjacent to the city of Birmingham. Lloyd Noland Hospital became Alabama’s first hospital to install radium and X-ray facilities for cancer treatment, the first to install electrotherapy, the first to use caudal anesthesia for childbirth, and the first to employ a full-time anesthesiologist. The hospital was also one of Alabama’s first teaching hospitals, educating over 675 students, and opened a School of Medical Technology in 1947 that has produced more than 750 graduates.
