Bryan had done more for the homeless of Birmingham than anyone before him and asked his closest friends to create a place for the poor and down-trodden. Dr. Henry Edmonds, Rev. James Mansfield, Judge Roger Snyder, Rev. James Cantrell, and others began the mission in five rooms on the top floor of a building at 406 South 20th Street. It was incorporated as the Brother Bryan Community Center on February 14, 1941.
Over the years, the mission changed its name to Brother Bryan Mission and moved three times before settling at its current location at 1616 Second Avenue North. Today, it operates as a 65-bed facility using resources of food, clothing, shelter, and other assets to minister to those in need. The staff includes Senior Staff Members such as Executive Director Jim Etheredge, Program Director Brian Keen, Facilities Manager Scott Jones, Chaplain Curtis Reynolds, Chaplain Don Steel, and Chaplain/Social Media George Wehby. The mission aims to ignite a spark of hope and change lives forever through its ministry.
The organization maintains a solid reputation among the customers it has served and has a steady record of repeat and referred customers. This standing reflects the trust placed in its long history of providing shelter and care to vulnerable men in the community.
Brother Bryan Mission continues its vital work in Birmingham, AL, by providing essential support and hope to men facing the most difficult challenges in their lives.
