Clemson University Sailing Center

Clemson University Sailing Center is a student-run sailing club in Seneca, SC, serving sailors of all experience levels through recreational sailing, competitive racing, and educational programs. The club offers Learn to Sail and Learn to Race classes, tailgates, social events, and participation in local and traveling regattas. Its race team competes in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) and travels to regattas across the East Coast, including locations in Florida, North Carolina, and Massachusetts, with travel costs covered by membership fees. The club operates from a dock adjacent to the campus beach on Lake Hartwell and welcomes all sailors regardless of skill level.

Founded in the mid-1960s as a grassroots effort by students using Penguins stored in a barn, the club evolved into an official student organization in 1969 after acquiring six Vanguard 420s. Over the decades, it has grown to include over 450 members and now operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The club maintains a fleet of 12 Zim E420 dinghies and three J24 keelboats, with dedicated teams for dinghy racing and offshore sailing. The Big Boat Team competes in major events such as Charleston Race Week and the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, while the race team has earned top finishes in SAISA championships. The club emphasizes community, leadership, and environmental stewardship through student-led roles and regular events like Fridays at Four, a weekly gathering for swimming, grilling, and sailing.
