About Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge

Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge in Georgetown, SC. Established on December 1, 1997, it protects and manages diverse habitats within coastal river ecosystems while providing wildlife-dependent recreational activities. The refuge serves visitors interested in hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, and environmental education. It holds a rating of 4.50 based on 516 reviews.

The refuge consists of wetland habitats ranging from historic, broken, and actively managed tidal rice fields to blackwater and alluvial floodplain forested wetlands of the Waccamaw and Great Pee Dee Rivers. These tidal freshwater wetland ecosystems are among the most diverse freshwater wetland systems in North America. They provide important habitat corridors for wildlife and play a critical role in filtration and stormwater retention for the primary drinking water resource of the greater Grand Strand region. The site supports swallow-tailed kites and more than 200 other bird species. Visitors can meander through cypress trees at the Cox Ferry Lake Recreation Area, canoe the Pee Dee River and Yauhannah Lake, or paddle through a blackwater swamp. The refuge offers miles of interpretive nature trails, a mountain biking trail, a boardwalk, kiosks, and a picnic pavilion. Hasty Point and the Cox Ferry Recreation Area are open seven days a week, while the Visitor Center requires a phone call for current hours of operation.

The location is situated on N Fraser St, about a quarter mile from North Fraser Street. It lies roughly three-tenths of a mile from the Great Pee Dee River and Yauhannah Lake. Highway 701 South is about nine-tenths of a mile away. Bull Creek is approximately one and a half miles from the site, and Yauhannah Creek is about two miles away.

The refuge has built a solid reputation among the customers it has served, supported by an established track record and a large base of customer reviews.

As one of the most diverse freshwater wetland systems in North America, Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge remains a central destination for outdoor recreation and conservation in Georgetown, SC.
