Charleston Progressive Academy

Charleston Progressive Academy is a middle school in Charleston, SC, serving students in grades CD-4 through sixth. The school emphasizes a progressive, student-centered approach to education, focusing on leadership development, academic excellence, and community engagement. As a Leader In Me Lighthouse School, it implements FranklinCovey’s whole-school transformation model to cultivate 21st-century leadership and life skills. The academy has a long-standing commitment to inclusive, thematic, and multiage instruction, rooted in its founding in 1997 by two retired Charleston County educators. It serves the downtown Charleston area and has maintained a strong presence in the community for over two decades.

Founded by Martelle W. Robinson and Harriet W. Wilder, the school began with kindergarten through second grade and expanded annually until reaching fifth grade. In 2004, it added middle school grades, continuing until 2009 when the district restructured. Since then, the academy has maintained a focus on early childhood and elementary education, currently serving students from CD-4 through sixth grade. The school is housed in the historic H.P. Archer building on Calhoun Street and has evolved through community-driven initiatives, including the Peninsula Promise, which aims to expand access to high-quality education across the Charleston Peninsula.

Located on Calhoun Street, Charleston Progressive Academy is situated just a short walk from key downtown landmarks. It is less than a tenth of a mile from Gaillard Center Park and the Susie J. Jackson Freedom Memorial Garden, both prominent green spaces and cultural sites in the city. The school is also within walking distance of the Charleston County Public Library and the Charleston County School District headquarters, reinforcing its deep integration into the civic and educational fabric of downtown Charleston.

The school earned a "Good" rating in the 2024-2025 School Report Card, reflecting its consistent academic performance and commitment to student development.
