The site’s history traces back to the 18th century, when Ephraim Leonard used the land for bog iron mining, establishing what is considered the oldest industrial site in Mansfield. The pond was later used by sheep farmers for wool washing, then transformed into a gristmill for grinding corn and later a sawmill for producing shooks. Remnants of a historic sluiceway still exist, and the land served as a duck farm after World War II before being purchased in 1959 by Joe and Emma Gonsalves. The property has evolved into a recreational destination while preserving its natural and industrial heritage.
