Montessori Scholars Academy

Montessori Scholars Academy is a preschool in Milton, GA, located at 13100 Morris Rd. It follows the Montessori method of education, a child-centered approach that encourages self-directed learning through hands-on activities and collaborative play. The method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator who began forming her educational philosophy while working with developmentally delayed children in Rome in the late 1890s. Montessori classrooms emphasize independence, choice, and respect for a child's natural psychological development, and are designed to foster intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth.

Distinctive features of the Montessori approach include three-hour blocks of activity time, mixed-age classrooms, and specific learning materials and curricula. Rather than pushing students toward maximum achievement in particular academic subjects, the method aims to create an environment of order, cleanliness, beauty, and harmony in which children develop a deep, self-directed interest in their activities. Dr. Montessori opened her first classroom, the Casa dei Bambini, in a Rome apartment building on January 6, 1907, with 50 to 60 children ages two to seven enrolled. The approach spread internationally before reaching the United States in 1912, and the first American Montessori school opened in Maine in 1913. More than a century after that first classroom, tens of thousands of Montessori programs operate around the world.
