Gordon County Public Defender

Gordon County Public Defender is a criminal defense lawyer in Calhoun, GA, located at 101 Boston Rd. The office represents defendants in criminal matters in Bartow and Gordon County Superior Court and delinquent matters in Bartow County Juvenile Court. It does not handle cases in Cherokee County, and it does not have the authority to handle divorce cases, child support cases, or cases pending in municipal or probate court. The office provides representation to indigent persons who are incapable of hiring their own attorneys and who are accused of crimes or subject to probation revocation proceedings in Superior Court.

The Public Defenders Office is an independent agency within the judicial branch of state government, created by the General Assembly in 2003 and appropriated state funding during a 2004 special session to deliver indigent defense services to all 49 judicial circuits within the state. The Public Defender for the Cherokee Judicial Circuit, which consists of Bartow and Gordon Counties, is appointed by a five-member circuit panel. Christopher G. Paul serves as Chief Circuit Defender. Indigency guidelines for Gordon County follow the federal standards and guidelines for determining indigency.

Applications are taken Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4 pm, and can be returned to the office by fax or in person with financial documents accompanying the application. An attorney will not be assigned to a case until the application process is complete, the necessary financial documents are provided, and the applicant has qualified.

The office sits on Boston Road, about 0.3 miles from the Gordon County Courthouse, North Wall Street, South Wall Street, BB&T Park, the Gem Theater, and Calhoun City Hall.

The office is responsible for providing constitutionally mandated effective legal counsel to indigent persons accused of crimes or facing probation revocation proceedings in Superior Court. For Calhoun and Gordon County residents who qualify, it is the appointed public defense office for Superior Court criminal matters.
