Its history begins in 1988 when a nurse and nurse practitioner co-founded the Georgia Nurses Association Foundation Clinic for the Homeless. In 1993, the group became the Athens Nurses Clinic, located on Reese Street, serving both homeless members of Athens-Clarke County and uninsured residents of the broader region. In 2016, the clinic moved to North Avenue and collaborated with three other agencies as part of the Athens Resource Center for Hope. By 2023, the addition of physicians, medical personnel, and interns led to a new organizational structure and the name change to Athens Wellness Clinic. The team of healthcare professionals has over 100 years of combined experience working in free and charitable clinics. Current providers include nurse practitioners, family medicine physicians, psychiatric nurse practitioners, clinical pharmacists, dentists, and dermatologists. The clinic also utilizes volunteer providers, interns, and personnel who give their time to support the community. One of the few organizations in Northeast Georgia offering free Hepatitis C testing and treatment, the clinic uses non-invasive imaging to individualize treatment plans after a complete medical history, physical exam, and lab work.
