What One Study Found

Businesses can protect their online visibility by checking Google rankings, AI crawler access and buyer-intent coverage as separate parts of one visibility process. Research across laptop brands found a positive relationship between Google and AI visibility, while a separate study of 15 brands found almost no relationship, showing that strong search rankings alone cannot predict whether ChatGPT will name a business.

The findings check whether search visibility can improve and if AI systems can read business pages or give customers clear brand mentions during buying questions.

What did the laptop brand study measure?

SEO Hacker examined 10 laptop brands: Apple, Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Samsung, LG and Razer. The study covered seven search themes, from the broad term "laptop" to use cases such as "laptop for gaming."

For each brand and theme, the researchers compared two measures: the number of Google keywords for which the brand ranked and the frequency with which the brand appeared in AI-generated answers. They also calculated whether the two measures moved together.

What did the study find?

Google visibility and AI visibility had a positive correlation in the laptop study. The strongest relationship appeared for the "best laptop" theme, where the correlation was about 0.88.

Lenovo, HP and ASUS led both the Google keyword counts and AI mention counts. Other brands did not follow the same pattern:

Dell ranked for many Google keywords but appeared less often in AI answers on the same topics.

Apple appeared in more AI answers than its keyword count would predict.

Samsung had strong AI visibility overall but appeared rarely in laptop-buying answers.

The "laptop for remote work" theme also exposed a possible opening. It had weak Google competition, while AI questions showed real demand for that use case.

Why does another study reach a weaker conclusion?

A Chatoptic study of 15 brands across five categories found almost no correlation between SEO strength and visibility in AI answers, according to research published in 2025.

Exploratory, feature-based and brand-seeking queries may each have had roughly 61% to 63% overlap.

Google rankings are one factor and may not indicate whether AI will mention a brand.

Which factors were associated with AI citations?

SE Ranking analyzed 129,000 domains across 216,524 pages in 20 niches, according to a study published in November 2025. Its analysis associated several measurable site characteristics with ChatGPT citations.

The number of referring domains appeared to have the strongest relationship with citation likelihood. Sites with no more than 2,500 referring domains may average 1.6 to 1.8 citations, compared with 8.4 for sites above 350,000. At 32,000 referring domains, the model’s average could rise from 2.9 citations to 5.6.

Content structure and depth also differed:

Articles below 800 words received an average of 3.2 citations, while articles above 2,900 words received an average of 5.1.

Pages with section lengths of 120 to 180 words between headings performed best, averaging 4.6 citations, while sections under 50 words averaged 2.7 citations, according to the SE Ranking analysis.

Pages with expert quotes averaged 4.1 citations, compared with 2.4 for those without, according to the SE Ranking analysis.

Pages with at least 19 statistical data points averaged 5.4 citations, compared with 2.8 for pages with minimal data in the cited analysis.

Pages updated within three months may average 6 citations, while outdated pages may average 3.6.

Google positions also differed. Pages ranking between positions 1 and 45 averaged 5 citations, while pages ranking 64 to 75 averaged 3.1, according to the SE Ranking analysis. The researchers said this did not prove that ChatGPT relies on Google’s index, but the two systems may evaluate authority and content quality in similar ways.

What should a business do now?

Keep building search visibility around real use cases. Write pages that connect the product or service to a buyer situation, such as remote work or gaming, rather than repeating broad category terms.

Check the pages that can support purchase decisions. Compare Google keyword rankings with brand mentions across buyer-intent questions. The laptop study found that keyword counts and AI mentions can diverge, so traffic alone is an incomplete measure.

Review crawl access and site usability. Check whether AI crawlers visit the site and whether an AI agent can locate the phone number, business hours and contact page. Crawler access and Google ranking are different checks, while both matter for a complete visibility review.

Add current information. Use credible expert quotations, specific data and concise sections. Update material that has become outdated rather than leaving dated buying information in place.

Earn independent reviews and comparisons. Build brand presence across third-party sites so buyers can find the business described outside its own website.

How can a business review both sides of visibility?

SEOScanPro offers tools for checking search and AI visibility. Its Rank Tracker records Google positions for selected keywords over time, according to SEOScanPro. According to SEOScanPro, its AI Visibility report tracks which AI crawlers visit and potentially read the site. An AI agent check attempts everyday tasks such as finding business details or reaching the contact page, while the free SEO audit can identify technical and on-page issues that may hold back visibility.

SEOScanPro may not measure how often ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Overviews mention a brand or record AI prompt volume. The laptop study demonstrates why those brand mentions should still be reviewed separately from rankings.

How should businesses judge AI visibility?

Start with the questions a customer asks before contacting a business. Check whether the brand appears in answers tied to those questions, whether the website explains the offering clearly and whether independent sources confirm the brand and service.

Then inspect the technical path to identify barriers to crawling and indexing. A search position does not prove that an AI crawler has read the page, and crawler access does not prove that the page will rank in Google.

Business owners can use search demand data and AI tools to find mentions tied to buyer intent and adjust their online presence.

FAQ

Do Google rankings guarantee visibility in ChatGPT?

No. According to Chatoptic, brands on Google’s first page appeared in ChatGPT 62% of the time. The Chatoptic study reported a correlation between Google rank and ChatGPT position of 0.034.

Which laptop brands led both Google and AI visibility?

Lenovo, HP and ASUS led both the Google keyword counts and AI mention counts in SEO Hacker’s study of 10 laptop brands.

What can a business check about AI access to its website?

A business can check which AI crawlers visit the site and whether an AI agent can find its phone number, business hours and contact page. These checks concern access and usability, not the frequency of brand mentions in AI answers.

Related coverage

Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews: Study Reveals Divergent Search Behavior – BizScoreAI

Google Maps Ranking Signals: 72 Oyster Rank Signals

AI Ranking Factors: 403K-Prompt Study Findings

SEOScanPro

SEOScanPro runs a full technical audit of a site and shows the measured result behind every check. Open the AI visibility report.

This article reports on publicly available information from the sources listed below.
