The French AI lab is positioning the model, nicknamed Le Chonk, as an open-weight alternative to closed systems that customers cannot fully control, host, or audit on their own infrastructure.

What the preview delivers

Mistral Large 4 carries about a trillion parameters in total, with 49 billion active during inference. It accepts multimodal input, produces text, and supports more than 160 languages. Mistral says it trained the model from scratch over roughly two months in European data centers, using Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs, with figures in the launch post and outside reporting placing the fleet at 3,800 to 4,000 GPUs. The previous Mistral Large 3 had 675 billion total parameters with 41 billion active, trained on 3,000 Nvidia H200 GPUs.

Until the weight release on Oct. 27, the preview is served on Mistral’s own infrastructure. As of launch, no Large 4 checkpoint was listed on Mistral’s Hugging Face page. Once the weights ship, expected under a custom Mistral license rather than Apache 2.0 (the license used for Large 3), outside evaluators can test the final model directly.

Why open weights matter for lock-in

Mistral’s central pitch is that a customer holding the weights has a complete copy no vendor can retire, and a closed model can disappear or have a capability turned off without notice. The concern is concrete. A recent incident in which a platform’s defensive actions were blocked by the guardrails of leading closed models, which mistook the defense for an attack, forced a switch to an open-weight model from a Chinese lab. That kind of dependency is the risk Mistral is selling against.

On a cyber benchmark that requires models to reproduce and patch a vulnerability, Mistral reports an 82% score, the highest of any model, with several leading closed models scoring near zero because they refuse the task. Mistral also reports 93% on Cybench and places Large 4 among the top five models on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, though public evaluations on that index do not yet list it. During the preview, cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners, and state authorities are testing the model with reduced moderation and expanded cyber capabilities.

How Large 4 compares on coding benchmarks

Mistral’s launch post gives Large 4 a 61.7% score on DeepSWE v1.1, rounded to about 62% in its chart. The same chart puts Reflection AI’s Beam at 44% and Qwen 3.8 Max at 51%, with GLM-5.3 sitting close to Mistral’s result.

The live DeepSWE leaderboard tells a different story. Selecting each model’s best published configuration as of Oct. 6 shows that GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3 reach about 69%, and closed models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic sit around 74%. Large 4 is not yet on that board, so its ranking claim is provisional until outsiders can test the final model and weights.

In a blind coding evaluation Mistral ran with Surge AI, Large 4 ranked second among five models, scoring 3.74 behind a Claude model at 4.22 and ahead of Kimi K3 at 3.59. On Harvey’s legal benchmark, Mistral’s chart gives Large 4 a 15% task-pass rate. The public Vals.ai board puts Kimi K3 at 12.92%, MiMo V2.6 Pro at 10.83%, and GLM-5.3 at 8.33%, a comparison that holds if Mistral used the same method as the public board.

Hardware limits and deployment realities

Large 4 is too large to run on a desktop or laptop and may be impractical even for some universities. That caps who can self-host the weights once they ship. Enterprise and government deployments, rather than individual developers, are the realistic audience for the full model.

Context: US restrictions and European positioning

The Trump administration temporarily restricted distribution of OpenAI and Anthropic models in June over cyberattack concerns, and the White House has reportedly asked American labs to withhold unreleased models even from the UK’s AI Safety Institute. That backdrop opened space for a Europe-based open-weight lab. Mistral raised €3 billion in a Samsung-led Series D on Sept. 8, at a post-money valuation above €21 billion, and says it supports more than 125 enterprises including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.

What the related research shows about open-weight viability

A study published in Radiology in January 2025 (doi: 10.1148/radiol.240895) found that open-weight large language models can match closed-weight systems on structured clinical text extraction. On a manually annotated English chest radiography dataset of 3,927 patients and reports, GPT-4o achieved a macro-averaged F1 score of 92.4%, while the open-weight Mistral-Large reached 92.6%, a statistically comparable result. On a German dataset of 18,500 reports, Mistral-Large reached 91.6% in zero-shot extraction and outperformed rule-based annotation, which scored 74.8%.

A second Radiology study from February 2025 (doi: 10.1148/radiol.241051) evaluated open-source and closed-source LLMs on extracting clinical history elements from imaging orders across 50,186 histories. The fine-tuned open-source Mistral-7B achieved a weighted overall mean accuracy of 91%, statistically comparable to GPT-4 Turbo at 92%, with substantial agreement against radiologist annotations (mean κ 0.73 to 0.77). The study concluded that an easily deployable fine-tuned open-source LLM can rival GPT-4 Turbo in performance on this task.

Together, the two studies suggest open-weight models are competitive with closed-weight systems on domain-specific clinical text tasks, supporting the broader argument that open-weight deployment does not require a large performance sacrifice.

FAQ

What is Mistral Large 4?

Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, is a multimodal model with about a trillion parameters in total and 49 billion active during inference.
