Gemini is now a keystroke away on any Windows 10 or 11 PC. Google has released a dedicated Windows app for its AI assistant, summoned by pressing Alt + Space, that puts chat, image generation, and video creation one shortcut above whatever you are already doing.<\/p>\n
The new app lets users skip the browser tab entirely and call up Gemini from inside any workflow. It also connects to other Google apps, including Gmail and Drive, so signed-in users can hand multi-step tasks to an agent feature called Gemini Spark, available on Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans in eligible countries such as the United States and Australia.<\/p>\n
The app mirrors the web version of Gemini. Users can create custom images with the Nano Banana image model and produce high-quality videos with Gemini Omni, all without leaving the desktop. Because it is a native app, it can be summoned at any moment, which removes the friction of opening a browser, signing in, and losing your place in another window.<\/p>\n
Pressing Alt + Space opens the app from anywhere on the PC, even when the user is in another program. That single shortcut replaces the usual routine of clicking into a browser tab and waiting for Gemini to load.<\/p>\n
Alt + Space is already a busy keyboard combination on Windows. It traditionally opens the active window’s system menu, and it is also the default shortcut for Microsoft’s PowerToys Run utility, a quick launcher that gives power users instant access to applications, files, calculator functions, and system commands.<\/p>\n
Installing the Gemini app reassigns that shortcut. On machines where PowerToys Run was set to Alt + Space, the Gemini app takes over the binding, so users who rely on PowerToys Run will need to remap one of the two tools to a different shortcut.<\/p>\n
The app includes the full set of Gemini web capabilities. Two of the most notable are image generation through Nano Banana and video creation through Gemini Omni. Subscribers to Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra in eligible countries can also hand off multi-step work to Gemini Spark, Google’s personal AI agent. Spark is currently not available in the UK.<\/p>\n

Two notable gaps remain in this first version. There is no Gemini Live experience inside the app. Live is the voice mode available on the iOS and Android versions of Gemini, where users can speak to the assistant naturally and, on mobile, point a camera at the world to ask questions about what the camera sees. A desktop version that could see the screen and answer questions about what is on it would be a major productivity boost, but that capability has not shipped yet. For now, the workaround is to take a screenshot and upload it through the app.<\/p>\n
The second issue is a privacy concern. The app permanently displays the user’s location at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar, and there is no obvious way to remove it. The location can only be hidden by closing the sidebar entirely, which is a clunky workaround. For anyone who shares screenshots of their desktop, that home or office address showing up in the frame is a real risk.<\/p>\n
Google has said more native desktop capabilities will roll out over time.<\/p>\n
