That reach is climbing fast, up 19 points from 38% earlier in the year, so an industrial brand named or cited in an AI answer is putting itself in front of buyers at the exact moment they research. The tradeoff is that this visibility is harder to measure than classic organic rankings, and the brands AI mentions are usually not the sites it cites as sources.

These findings come from a report combining three Semrush datasets: keyword and SERP data on AI Overview presence, clickstream data on traffic channels, and AI mentions and citations from the Semrush AI visibility database.

How much are AI Overviews growing in manufacturing search?

Across a set of 458 manufacturing and industrial keywords, AI Overviews grew from 38% of all search volume in January 2026 to 57% in July 2026. They are becoming a standard part of the results page in this sector, and not only for informational queries like "what is a transformer." Specific product searches such as "pneumatic cylinder" and "csla2gf" gained an AI Overview during that period, and so did brand searches like "National Instruments."

Where does manufacturing web traffic actually come from?

Direct visits and organic search remain the engine of this industry, together accounting for nearly 80% of all sessions to manufacturing sites. AI-referred traffic is still early: AI Mode and AI assistants combine for just 0.48% of all sessions. Within that stable overall mix, direct traffic share is growing while organic search share is declining, a shift driven by zero-click search and new discovery platforms rather than by any drop in demand for industrial products.

Low referral numbers do not mean AI visibility is wasted. A survey of more than 600 B2B professionals found buyers are already using AI to shortlist vendors and inform purchases worth over $1,000. Buyers often act on an AI conversation later, by running a Google search or visiting a brand’s site directly, a delayed path that traditional analytics struggles to capture. Rising direct traffic or branded search can be a sign that AI visibility is working even when the AI referral never shows up in reports. A brand mentioned in AI answers is building recognition that can pay off well after the conversation ends.

Why brand mentions and cited sources are two different rankings

A mention is a brand’s name appearing in the text of an AI answer. A citation is a link AI points to as a source. The manufacturing brands with the most mentions are largely not the sites AI platforms cite. The top-mentioned brands are 3M, John Deere, and Boeing, names people already trust and that predate OpenAI and Gemini by decades, with wide product lines relevant to many prompts.

The gap between mentions and citations

Of the top 15 domains by each metric, only two brands, Vevor and Grainger, appear on both lists. The top-cited domains are a mix of directories, distributors, brands, and reference sites, including engineerfix.com, vevor.com, thermofisher.com, sigmaaldrich.com, made-in-china.com, rs-online.com, thebluebook.com, grainger.com, thomasnet.com, procore.com, rsc.org, protoolreviews.com, globalspec.com, carrier.com, and energysage.com.

Authority Score, Semrush’s measure of domain trust based on organic traffic, backlinks, and spam signals, helps explain the split. The top-mentioned brands show consistent authority. The top-cited sources vary widely: engineerfix.com, the most-cited source, scores only 17, while made-in-china.com scores 77, higher than any top-mentioned brand. Website authority appears to line up more closely with earning mentions than with earning citations, which means the same work that builds site authority can also help a brand get named in AI answers.

Why ChatGPT and Google cite different sources

Each AI platform behaves differently when it picks sources. Most large language models named the same top brands, but their top-cited sources varied. engineerfix.com dwarfs other sources on ChatGPT, yet it does not crack the top-cited sources on Gemini, AI Mode, or AI Overviews. One likely reason is its footprint beyond Google. The site ranks for only about 3,700 Google keywords with little estimated Google traffic, but pulls close to 300,000 monthly organic visits overall, with DuckDuckGo, Bing, and Yahoo driving over 68% of that traffic and Google under 2%. A strategy that wins citations on ChatGPT may not win them on Google’s AI platforms at the same rate, so tracking visibility across every engine gives the fuller picture.

Do more mentions mean more AI traffic?

Mention and citation counts do not map neatly to AI-referred visits. Vevor.com and grainger.com show AI traffic that rivals or exceeds what their mention counts would suggest, and siemens.com’s AI traffic bar exceeds its mention count entirely. Among cited sources, engineerfix.com leads on ChatGPT citations but earns only a fraction of the AI traffic that domains lower on the list receive. Grainger, made-in-china.com, and rsc.org drew some of the strongest AI traffic among the top-cited sources.

What kind of content earns useful citations?

The value of a citation depends on what a reader can do next. engineerfix.com publishes broad engineering guides and FAQ-style content, useful to read but with no clear action to take, so there is little reason to click through. made-in-china.com is a marketplace with a large catalog, so a citation can lead straight to a product or purchase. Grainger, a major distributor, gives buyers a place to order; one of its top AI-traffic pages is a product page for a Motorola two-way radio. rsc.org, the Royal Society of Chemistry, shows a third pattern: its most-cited pages sit in an /element/ subfolder covering periodic-table elements like neon, iron, lithium, and chlorine, while its most-clicked pages are peer-reviewed research papers in a /content/ subfolder on topics such as PFAS chemistry, composite materials, and biodegradable coatings. Dense, original research and reference material offers something an AI answer cannot fully reproduce, which gives readers a reason to follow the link.

FAQ

What share of manufacturing searches now show an AI Overview?

Across 458 tracked manufacturing and industrial keywords, AI Overviews appeared on 57% of search volume in July 2026, up from 38% in January 2026, a rise of 19 points.

How much website traffic in manufacturing comes from AI search?

AI Mode and AI assistants combine for just 0.48% of all sessions to manufacturing sites. Direct visits and organic search together account for nearly 80% of sessions.

Are the brands AI mentions the same ones it cites as sources?

Mostly not. Of the top 15 domains by each metric, only Vevor and Grainger appear on both the most-mentioned and most-cited lists. Top mentions skew to legacy brands like 3M, John Deere, and Boeing, while top citations include directories, distributors, and reference sites.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"What share of manufacturing searches now show an AI Overview?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Across 458 tracked manufacturing and industrial keywords, AI Overviews appeared on 57% of search volume in July 2026, up from 38% in January 2026, a rise of 19 points."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How much website traffic in manufacturing comes from AI search?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"AI Mode and AI assistants combine for just 0.48% of all sessions to manufacturing sites.
